Choose Colts Bill Polian wrong with RB Donald Brown

Well, Bill Polian, once again has left the project experts scratching their heads. With the pick 27 in the 1st round, the Colts selected the versatile Donald Brown (RB University of Connecticut), a shock to those who predict the Colts to bolster the defensive position to help stop the run. Although it seems a strange choice, maybe the experts should have seen it coming. Last year, the Colts 24th place overall run defense, which was mainly attributed to the lower Keyunta Dawson and Eric Foster, a 7th round rookie and a respectively. Due to their offensive success, which most seem to have overlooked is that the Colts finished the season ranked 31st in the league in ground offensive. Joseph Addai was expected to have a break out year, but only an average of 3.5 yards per carry and totaled about paltry 544 yards of the season leaving fans sometimes begging for the promotion of Dominic Rhodes.
Many felt that the lack of run production was due to the beating the offensive line, but Polian selection Donald Brown shows his true concern. Still not convinced a RB was the way forward? Let's take a look at next season's depth chart at running back Joseph Addai, starter, and Mike Hart, backup. Yes, that's Mike Hart. The Michigan Wolverine himself drafted in the sixth round which sat the entire season with a torn ACL. I could not even be back at full strength in training camp. So, let me think, all I have is an unproven 6th round draft pick who is coming off a knee injury, and kicker, runs a 4.67 … healthy! Watching evidence, why not choose a Colts RB in the 1st round? The real question should be: Why not choose Beanie Wells (RB, Ohio State)? Wells is considered a rare blend of size and speed being 6'1 237 pounds and run 4.59. He has a devastating stiff arm in the field leaving open the deep and supporters looking for their helmets. The question mark about Wells is his durability. The Buckeye was sidelined for part of the season with an injury in the foot and the doubts that have surrounded since.
This situation seems familiar? Remember that in 1999, chose a less popular Polian Edgerrin James at all time NCAA rushing leader Ricky Williams. Polian believes that James was a complete and return best fits the Colts' system. Hmm … Mr. Polian, I'm beginning to have a bit of déjà vu. The choice of this year, obviously received less attention, but Addai's performance last year, may be as important for success of the offense for the high-powered Indy. Without a viable running game, defenses can throw an extra defense in high school to the air defense of Peyton Manning assault. The question to be answered in future will be or not Polian's genius struck again? Personally, I think Polian has swung and missed on this one similar to portfolio Rob Morris in the first round of 2000. Brown was the leading rusher in the NCAA last year with 2.083 yards and 5.7 yards per carry of 4.8 yards to the previous year. Cap 1197 yds happened only year due to sit out three games, but averaged 5.8 yards per carry of 5.9 yards last year and 5.5 yards the year prev. I do not think the Colts can go wrong with Brown seekers as a backup, but the problem I have is that we launched a potential home run ball and decided bunt. Take a hack at it! Adrian Peterson fell in the draft to the number 7 spot due to recurrent injuries Beanie reasons similar to those fallen. Do not believe teams that passed on him are probably kicking themselves almost every day? Wells do not think Peterson can be as good, but as the back as Wells not come too often. Wells is a big booty and ensures that even if Addai does not come out of his slump Junior year, and the offensive line is tapped again, has a big butt up running a 4.59 (faster than 4.60 and Knowshon Moreno slower than Donald Brown at 4.51) with a chip on his shoulder ready to make their own holes. Fans Colts only have to wait and see if Polian has demonstrated once again the experts and I am wrong.
The Colts addressed their defensive line problems by trade until moala Fiji (DT, USC) in the 2nd round, and Terrance Taylor (DT, Michigan) in the 4th round. Besides the newly resumed Ed Johnson, Colts are believed to have added much needed size and strength to help stop the run and benefit from the doubles team of Robert Mathis and Dwight Freeney. The Colts even more strengthened its defense in the 3rd round of the election of Jerraud Powers (CB, Auburn). This physical corner is a great addition to a young and improving school. He is a strong advocate of the area and a sure tackler, which is key in the system of the Colts defense. This defense project contributions could significantly improve defense fantasy Colts in 2009. In the past, the Colts defense was based on the "curve is not broken" adage. It is possible that these additions can become always more dominant and capitalize on turnovers. I do not think the Colts defense is a defense project and maintain the fantasy, but it will certainly be enough good to collect in a week to week battles against good. The defense produced turnovers, but the accompanying core line is still too small and lost too many tackles. As in the past, defense undoubtedly depend on the health of Bob Sanders and Dwight Freeney.
Austin Collie (WR, BYU), was selected by the Colts in the 4th round. This selection was up more support to deepen their Colts receiver Marvin Harrison nucleus after lost to free agency. Collie will make a backup of Nice, but will not see any playing time immediately. You can finally see some time in the slot with Pierre Garcon and Roy Hall. The Colts 6th and 7th round were influenced by a big season out of the movement, the loss of punter Hunter Smith. In the Colts 6th round, selected Curtis Painter, Purdue QB. Now you wonder how Hunter Smith could influence the pick? Well, Smith also served as the third string emergency QB for the Colts. The front office said they were planning to keep three QB's this year, therefore, the selection of Painter. The Colts took Pat McAfee, Punter West Virginia, in the 7th round as a direct replacement for Hunter Smith.
Fantasy Impact – B
Donald Brown, over time, possibly division as a pinch runner and perhaps as a starter this could be a great pickup in keeper leagues or late season brochure in regular leagues. Austin Collie could arise in the future as a slot receiver in the Colts' pass happy system. The defense has grown and hopefully better against the run that could allow owners of fantasy choose more often, every week.
Draft Grade – B +
The Colts responded to their weaknesses and their strengths. That game needed to improve performance and grow bigger against the run they did. In my opinion, a defense would have been a good "rounds later and depending on the progression of Donald Brown against Beanie Wells that will tell the true extent of this project for the Colts.
